Saint Mary or barbeque between the buildings

Yesterday a major Orthodox celebration took place: Saint Mary or Grand (sic!) Mary as popular it is called in this country. Lots of celebration throughout Mazemania and of course also in South Moldavia were I am right now.

Many Marias and Marians celebrated yesterday their name day in a local manner. They took out after they came from work (so after 3 PM) the barbeques. But they didn’t go to the nearby forest or on a field but as they do it here they place them right in front of the famous Romanian “blocks” (apartment buildings). And there were hundreds of open fires and smell of meat throughout the city…an European City. For an outsider as myself this was a shock. Of course I’ve seen it before but only here. Actually I see this events in front of the apartment building on the sidewalk every Saturday and Sunday. They fry all sorts of meet that they later eat inside their apartment leaving the fire to die by itself outside.

Yesterday I was counting the open fires within the city, some high as 1 metter. Of course I couldn’t count them all as they were hundreds. Seems that it is sort of a local tradition that some might explain that this people moved in the city with the traditions from the country side were they lived before. That might be an explanation but not necessary the only one.

Anyway the funny thing is that near the Fire Department there were lots of open fires/ barbeques like this…and it seemed to me that some smell of cokking came also from within the Fire Dept too. But I might be wrong. There is no worry within the autorithies here that all these opened fores might once destroy the city through a major fire. Probably the peopel are more relaxed in this area as it is known to be the most severe seismic area of Romania, plus every year seem to have lots of flooding in the are too. So…what wrong can happend with a barbeque around the block?…..

Oops! I did it again…

Who recognizes the lyrics from the title? Many teenagers and not only. Strange thing lately I started to change myself even in listening to different kind of music that I was used too. Actually I started diversify… Is that good or bad? I think is important to be as open as possible and to try to learn and accept new things and see the beauty of the world in anything.

My life is changing drastically lately and it is some time interesting to observe tis change. Human body and spirit go through these changes together and they become obvious after a while. And I become fascinated with the changes in my body – maybe because it is easier to notice them, and those in my spirit. Although a lot o stress and problems hit me in my face in the last months I become more relaxed and confident in myself…of course with a little help from my friends (if you allow the quote!).

I remember 1998 I considered to be the year of change for me but seems that there are in life more years that become milestones for the future development. I reach the second or maybe there were others before that I forgot to count? Who knos?! I am aware of these ones only…2006 second milestone for my life – and I must say a very serious one on all levels. Actually as far as i read from others experiences rarely you meet in one’s life these kind of combined changes on all levels that actually solve in a marvolous way for you. So I am not worry about any kind of future milestones even though I would prefer happy ones and not the dramatic ones. But as I can predict things I take them as they are and proceed accordingly with my state of mind and spirit at that time.

It’s a wonderful life…

Forever gone… Miss me?

I was out of the picture for quite some time now. My work took me away in the country and being busy I was not able to write sooner another post for this blog. But here I am coming back with a new post.

As I was saying for the past 6 months I am working in another part of Mazemania and incredibly or not this region of Mazemania (also known as Romania) brought to my atention many things related to the culture and mentality of the people living in this country. I’m coming from Transylvania, a place world wide famous due to Dracula mith esspecially. But a place very different then the rest of the country. When I arrived in south Moldavia I was shocked from the start by some differences. What stroke me the most? The man here take more care then in other places on their body looks – meaning they due body building a lot here. Also they spend their money on luxury cars and brand clothes and shoes (esspecially Adidas type ones). They invest in sun glasses and expensive parties with the friends. BUT most of them don’t own a house or apartment or some time even the car they are driving. Everything here is just surface. Women are the same. Of course we can find people that are not like this, and actually save the place through their work for the community but as majority people are very superficial from the 14 years old to the 50 years old ones.

The city I live in is not very nice but ok. It can become a very beautiful one but there is a need for a leader. Of course their is a local leader, sort of a Lord from the 15 century. Actually this was the thing that stroke me the most here: it seemed like turing back to communist Romania. This county is maybe as far as I travel around the country, the only one left in the other times. Of course some privatization took place here, small steps towards capitalism were done in here too – but on the other side China has more capitalist mentality then the people here… They need a new type of leaders (plural) and get rid of the past but that is maybe the most difficult thing to do.

By that time people are living these places with thousands to work in Italy, Spain, Germany. There are actually entire small neighborhouds in Rome, Milan etc of people from South Moldavia. Another interesting fact is that there is almost no labour force left here so they have to import workers from Republic of Moldavia, China etc Strange, isn’t it? The people left these places to find better paid jobs in the West and others from the East come here (which is for them the West) to find better paid jobs. What a crazy world!!!

The last fact for this post is related to the wine that makes this region famous in Romania. But you bearly find wine for sale here… Also the wine when you find it is so bad that makes you throw up… of course in the supermarket (there are only 3 supermarkets in the whole region!!!) you can find bottle wine BUT from other part of Romania. Why is that? Actually I don’t know but I bet bad management and marketing. Actually the wines here are excellent but the god ones dissapear somewhere and only fake ones make place on the market. Plus here everyone produces his own wine which of course drinks it pretty fast!

That’s about South Moldavia in the beautiful Mazemania! I’LL BE BACK!!!
